Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone by A.M. Ruttle

Aerial photography is a passion; maybe it's from being a glider pilot, maybe it came before that. The Grand Prismatic Spring in the heart of Yellowstone shows its full glory from the air. Yes, it looks familiar because it has been photographed for the cover of National Geographic and other fine magazines. I had heard how difficult it was to get this shot, and of course it only made me more determined. Normally people are not present in my photographs of the natural world, but in this case, they are almost necessary to show the huge scale of this famous geothermal spring. (You'll notice a fast shutter speed was necessary - there was a ton of turbulence.)
